Description

These buttery cookies with a hint of matcha are perfect for tea time or anytime! Simple to make and absolutely delicious. Let’s get baking!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup powdered sugar (also called icing or confectioner’s sugar)
  • 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons culinary grade matcha powder
  • Pinch of salt
  • Optional: Sprinkle of sugar or additional matcha for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prep the Dough:
In a bowl, cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and powdered sugar until smooth and well combined. No need for perfection—just mix until combined.
  2. Add Dry Ingredients:
In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, matcha powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry mixture to the butter-sugar mixture. Mix until the dough just comes together. Avoid overmixing!
  3. Form the Dough:
Divide the dough in half and shape each portion into a log about 2 inches in diameter. Wrap in plastic film and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to firm up.
  4. Preheat the Oven:
Preheat your oven to 325°F (160°C) once the dough is firm. Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  5. Slice and Bake:
Slice the dough into rounds about ⅓ to ½ inch thick. Place them on the prepared baking sheets, leaving some space between each cookie. Sprinkle with extra sugar or matcha, if desired.
  6. Bake to Perfection:
Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden. The base will remain a lighter color, so don’t overbake.
  7. Cool It:
Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. Enjoy:
Serve these delightful cookies with your favorite cup of tea, and bask in the deliciousness!

Notes

  • Choose Quality Matcha: Use a vibrant, culinary-grade matcha powder for the best color and flavor. Dull matcha will affect the appearance and taste.
  • Soften Butter Properly: Make sure your butter is softened, not melted, to ensure the dough has the right texture.
  • Chill the Dough: Don’t skip the chilling step! It helps the cookies hold their shape while baking.
  • Even Slices: Use a sharp knife to cut the dough into uniform slices for even baking.
  • Customize Garnish: Sprinkle a little extra matcha powder, sugar, or even edible glitter for a fun twist!
  • Don’t Overbake: The cookies are done when the edges are lightly golden. Overbaking will make them too hard.
  • Storage: Store in an airtight container for up to a week to keep them fresh and buttery.
