These Danish Butter Cookies are tender, buttery and shaped into beautiful piped rosettes that feel instantly festive. The dough whips into a light, airy texture that bakes into cookies with a soft crumb and a classic old world flavor. They are perfect for Christmas cookie trays, gifting or serving with a warm cup of coffee or tea.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, soft and at room temperature
  • 1 cup confectioners sugar
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 half teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Whisk the flour and salt together in a medium bowl and set aside.
  3. Add the butter, confectioners sugar and vanilla to the bowl of a stand mixer. Using the paddle attachment, beat on medium high for 3 to 5 minutes until the mixture becomes very light and fluffy.
  4. Add the milk and mix again to blend it in.
  5. Add the flour mixture in two or three additions, mixing well after each one. The dough will come together and feel soft but thick.
  6. Transfer the dough to a sturdy piping bag fitted with a Wilton 1M tip.
  7. Pipe rosettes onto the prepared baking sheet.
  8. Bake for 13 to 15 minutes or until the edges turn a very light golden color.
  9. Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

If the dough feels too thick to pipe, let it rest at room temperature for a few minutes or add a tiny splash of milk until it moves smoothly through the piping bag. These cookies can be dipped or drizzled with melted chocolate and decorated with sprinkles once cooled. They stay fresh for several days when stored in an airtight tin.
